After high school I got a BS in zoology, then joined the Peace Corps and worked in a science education program in South Korea (it was an poor, underdeveloped country in 1970). After Peace Corps I took the slow trip home, i.e. kept heading west and made it all the way around the world until I was back in Mount Prospect. Two highlights of my travels were climbing the highest mountain in southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu on Borneo, and an interesting incident at the USSR and Poland border. Russian border guards spent couple of hours searching our train cabin, but never found what they were looking for, so they finally let us go. Living two years in Asia and traveling solo through 11 countries did have an impact on me; turned me into a not very devout Buddhist and socialist. After I got home the draft board finally caught up with me, so I spent some time in the army, working in a medical research lab in San Francisco (tough duty). After that I moved across the Bay to UC Berkeley and got an MS in environmental engineering and proceeded to work as a state regulator for 33 years, mostly on projects related to cleaning up San Francisco Bay. Also got married along the way (40th anniversary is soon) and had two daughters, one is a Doctor of Psychology and the other is still in college.
